Abortion bans in America resulted in at least 22,180 additional live births and 478 more infant deaths than would have been expected, two studies revealed.
The analyses are thought to be the first to show the unequal impact across the 14 states with near-total abortion bans.
One study found infant deaths were 5.6 per cent higher than if the bans hadn’t been enforced, although most of these deaths were attributed to Texas.
Despite significant legal challenges from mothers forced to carry risky or nonviable pregnancies, abortions are not permitted in Texas even for foetuses diagnosed with “life-limiting” conditions.
The study also found Black infants died at a rate 11 per cent higher across the 14 states than would be expected.
At the same time, another study found more pregnant people were forced to carry unwanted pregnancies to term in the states with the worst maternal and child health outcomes, including Texas among them.
