Just Stop Oil is ending its campaign of direct action after three years, thousands of arrests, and the imprisonment of dozens of members.
The group has called itself “one of the most successful civil resistance campaigns in recent history”, citing the Labour Party’s promise not to issue new oil and gas licences.
But Keir Starmer’s team insists Labour’s pledge had nothing to do with JSO, and the campaign group hasn’t triumphed in its wider goal to end oil and gas production altogether.
Novara Media reports that the group’s recruitment has dwindled due to the risk of harsh jail sentences, with some members serving record-breaking terms for civil disobedience.
Following in the footsteps of Extinction Rebellion, which called off direct action in 2023, JSO is holding a final protest in Westminster for “everyone who wants to be a part of building the new resistance”.
That resistance may come to look more like irrelevance.
