Soaring US egg prices lead to extra charges at restaurants

Police in Pennsylvania are investigating the theft of about 100,000 eggs from the back of a distribution van. That’s $40,000 worth of eggs at today’s prices.

The price of eggs in the US has risen steeply in the last few months and economists warn it will continue to rise throughout 2025, especially if authorities fail to contain an avian flu outbreak that has forced the culling of more than 36 million birds since October.

The Trump campaign’s decision to focus on eggflation as a source of voter worries now looks foolhardy.

Last September, JD Vance blamed Kamala Harris’s economic policies for the price of eggs while holding a carton during a photo-op at a shop in Pennsylvania.

The administration has continued to pin the blame on Democrats, who say that shutting down government departments focused on fighting disease will only push prices higher.

Meanwhile, Waffle House has become the first national restaurant chain to introduce a surcharge of 50 cents per egg.
