The FBI infiltrated a dark web money laundering scheme – then kept it going

In 2023, the FBI quietly arrested the cyber criminal behind a dark web money laundering scheme known as ElonmuskWHM.

Then they took over his operation and ran it for nearly a year.

The criminal enterprise offered a simple service: customers would send ElonmuskWHM illicitly earned cryptocurrency, and the business would mail them untraceable cash in return, hidden inside children’s books and envelopes.

They profited by charging a 20 per cent fee.

When the man behind the business was arrested, nearly $90 million worth of cryptocurrency had travelled through his network over three years.

The FBI ran the site for 11 months after his arrest and, according to a report by 404 Media, continued to process transactions and gather evidence against his customers, who included drug traffickers and hackers.

The FBI prevented an additional $1.4 million from being laundered during this time.

How much crime they may have facilitated in the name of infiltrating a criminal enterprise, however, is unclear.
