More than 150 women were raped and burned to death as male inmates set fire to and fled a prison in the Democratic Republic of Congo.
On 27 January, more than 4,000 prisoners escaped Muzenze prison in Goma as Rwanda-backed M23 rebels fought to take the city.
UN human rights chief Volker Türk, citing judicial authorities, said most of the 165 female prisoners were raped before dying in the fire.
A Channel 4 report showed Red Cross workers removing burned bodies of women and children. A female survivor told Channel 4 that more than 100 children were in the prison.
Türk condemned Rwanda’s military support for M23 and urged both to halt their advance. It’s estimated that nearly 3,000 people died in the Goma fighting.
The UN said it was verifying reports of rape, gang rape, and sexual slavery across eastern DRC.
