Internet sleuths have put their tinfoil hats on after discovering a mysterious tower in Area 51.
The US Air Force facility 83 miles northwest of Las Vegas has long been associated in certain minds with extra-terrestrials and UFOs.
In a recent update to Google Earth, users discovered a mysterious dark triangular tower had appeared next to a runway.
As with most things related to Area 51, seemingly inexplicable phenomena turn out to have simple explanations.
Google Earth only updates thinly populated areas every couple of years so could easily have missed the construction of what is most likely a radar tower.
But that hasn’t stopped conspiracists speculating wildly.
According to one Reddit user it’s “obviously alien technology. It pops out when the Earth is done.”
