Some AIs are smarter than others

How intelligent is artificial intelligence?

If you’re in the tribe that accepts the premise of AI rather than throwing a clog at it on the basis that intelligence is a human thing, the answer is: more intelligent than it was.

The Wall Street Journal has produced an explanatory piece illustrating the advance of AI in four charts, the most interesting of which tracks the performance of rival generative AI models over time.

It finds the most-improved in terms of maths, coding and general knowledge is a latecomer, xAI, leaping from bottom to near the top of the class since last year according to a ranking system devised by Artificial Analysis, a benchmarking firm.

All six models assessed this year are smarter than the four assessed two years ago, including the then-class swot OpenAI (now behind xAI in third).

They’re learning fast and bunching up. The WSJ suggests the best way to tell between them may soon be by price.
