Clearview AI attempted to purchase hundreds of millions of US arrest records

Clearview AI, a US company that sells facial recognition software to law enforcement and governments around the world, attempted to buy hundreds of millions of arrest records and mugshots from an intelligence company operating in 50 US states.

404 Media revealed that Clearview tried to pay close to a $1 billion to a company called Investigative Consultant, Inc for a database that included social security numbers and email addresses, but that negotiations fell apart after the parties clashed about how the data would be used.

Clearview, which says it wants to “ensure almost everyone in the world will be identifiable”, is facing a barrage of lawsuits and regulatory including a €33 million fine in the Netherlands for “automatically” harvesting from photos on the internet.
